Everywhere you turn these days, you’ll find an opportunity to hear about ED pills. The ads ask you to ask your doctor, or you’ll see an older couple take a vacation and use a boat named Viagra. But, none of the ads explain how the pills work. What happens in your body. And, why they can make an erection happen.

So, let’s take a closer look at how the “magic” works.

It’s one of the great paradoxes of life. You have to relax to have an erection.

It’s hard to believe. Most men don’t feel relaxed and it doesn’t look like you’re relaxed when you have an erection.

But, but the chemistry and physiology of an erection is totally dependent on relaxation.

FIrst, let’s look at the chemistry.

NItric Oxide is a chemical present in everyone’s body. It is the chemical that starts the erection process. Nitric Oxide actually triggers the production of cyclic GMP, sometimes referred to as cGMP, in the muscle cells inside your corpora cavernosa.

The corpora cavernosa are special areas within the penis that lare shaped like two tubes of tissue. Most of the time, corpora cavernosa are soft and small, with a consistency much like a damp sponge.

Until they start to do their job in helping achieve and maintain an erection.

Now, physiology kicks in to continue the process.

The cGMP allows the smooth muscles in the corpora cavernosa to relax, letting lots more blood to come flowing into your penis. As the corpora cavernosa fill with blood, all the nooks and crannies become engorged,  and the spongy tissues expand and become hard enough to hold your penis erect.

So, if the muscles in your penis don’t relax enough to let your blood flow in, you won’t be able to have an erection.

It seems paradoxical, having to relax to get hard. But, that’s how it works.

How does this fit with how the little so called “magic pills” are supposed to work?

These pills all belong to a class of drugs known as selective enzyme inhibitors.
This means they block, or inhibit, a particular, or selective, enzyme that interferes with maintaining a healthy level of cGMP.

If you don’t have enough cGMP, you can’t have an erection. By using these selective enzymes to block the production of the enzyme that interferes with cGMP, you can have an erection.

Does this mean you need to run out and get the pill right away?

I don’t think so. Your body is usually does a pretty good job maintaining a good enough level of cGMP on its own. Unless, low cGMP really is the problem, a pill won’t fix what’s giving you trouble with erections.

Most of the time low cGMP isn’t the problem.

Remember, the two major causes of erectile difficulties aren’t medical.

Lifestyle habits that interfere with healthy functioning, like poor diet, too little exercise, and too much alcohol or nicotine, are the biggest culprits.

Relationship issues that interfere with intimacy, feeling desire, and wanting to be close to your honey, come a close second.

No pill is going to fix either of these.

So, before you go out and demand the doctor give you some pills, do a little more sleuthing and determine just what is going on with your body, your habits, and your relationship. Don’t just choose a remedy before you know the ailment.
