When we think of incontinence we usually think of women, and while a higher percentage of women struggle with incontinence than men, men still have problems. Especially older men.
In fact, if this is you, don’t feel embarrassed or a modern equivalent of the Lone Ranger. About 3.4 million men in the U.S. are currently dealing with incontinence.
And, like for women, urinary incontinence in men is not a normal sign of aging and doesn’t have to be inevitable.
The biggest challenge is making sure what you are doing about male incontinence is actually helping and not hurting. Especially if you’ve done a quick internet search and found lots of links for Kegel exercises and think they are the magic answer for male incontinence. If you aren’t careful in understanding just what kind of incontinence you have, and Kegels may well be the last thing you want to do because they will make things worse rather than better.
In a recent interview with a physical therapist who specializes in pelvic floor disorders, she explained that there are two kinds of incontinence: stress incontinence and urge incontinence. (Check out what she said about the hydraulics of incontinence and the differences in stress and urge incontinence in this post.)
So, what’s a guy to do? Check with your urologist and make sure you understand what kind of incontinence you have and what exercises can help. If he isn’t sure what you are talking about, be sure you ask for a referral to a physical therapist who specializes in pelvic floor disorders.
